Why V-notch?
Think of a V-notch as a lobster's "supermom" badge.
When a lobsterman catches an egg-bearing female lobster, they cut a 1/4 inch V-shaped notch in her tail and sends her back home to the ocean. That V-notch tells everyone she's off-limits to harvest, even after her eggs are gone.
By protecting these breeding females, they can reproduce multiple times and help grow the next generation of lobsters. A single 1/4 inch v-notch can save a lobster from harvest for up to 6 years. Research also shows that V-notches don't harm or hurt the lobster at all!
It's a simple but powerful tool that ensures Maine's lobstering heritage continues, one V-notch at a time.
